Ila Arun
Born, brought up & graduated in Rajasthan, Ila Arun wears many hats those of Actor, Singer, Theatre Producer-Director, Music Composer, Folk Dancer but what is not much known is the hat she wears that of a Writer/ Playwright / Poet/ & Lyricist. Words seemed to fascinate as well as dominate her personality. She contributed regularly with poems & special features in Hindi for national magazines & journals right from her school days.
Moving to Mumbai in 1980, ILA Arun created her mark for acting in over 40 films like Mandi, Ardh-Satya, Aghaat, China Gate, Jodha Akbar, Welcome to Sajjanpur, Ghoom-Ketu, and TV serials like Tamas, Life-line and Discovery of India. She also acted in International film ‘West is West’ for which she was nominated at Toronto & Abu-Dhabi film festivals.
She wrote lyrics and composed music for 10 music albums and her music videos made her into a cult figure. Her songs were popular on MTV & V-Channels. Her unique style of singing gained worldwide popularity with the song ‘Choli Ke Peechhe kya Hai’ which is recreated even this year for a film. She has done playback singing for over 50 films.
As a playwright she has written four original widely successful plays in Hindi, and written adaptations of 10 plays of some of world’s famous playwrights. For her relentless pursuit of popularising Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s works through her brilliant adaptations she was awarded the highest civilian award “King’s Order of Merit – Knight 1st Class” by H.M. King Harald V of Norway in 2018.
She got the prestigious “The Fellowship Award” from the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy in 2022.
