Kashinath Singh

Kashinath Singh (born January 1, 1937) is a renowned Hindi writer and scholar, celebrated for his novels and short stories.

He was born in Jiyanpur village, Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh. Singh completed his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where he later served as a professor and head of the Hindi department. His elder brother, Dr. Namvar Singh, was a distinguished literary critic.

Kashinath Singh’s most famous work is Kashi Ka Assi, which vividly portrays the life and culture of the Assi Ghat area in Varanasi. Published in 2008, the novel was later adapted into the film Mohalla Assi.

In 2011, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Rehan Par Ragghu. Throughout his career, he has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Sharad Joshi Samman, Sahitya Bhushan, Katha Samman, Rajbhasha Samman, and Bharat Bharti Award.

In recognition of an extraordinary literary legacy and unparalleled contributions to Hindi literature, Kashinath Singh has been honored with the Banaras Lit Fest Bhartendu Harishchandra Lifetime Achievement Award 2025.
